Safety Switch Installation & Testing

A safety switch (Residual Current Device or RCD) is the most important safety device in your home's electrical system. It detects dangerous current leakage — caused by a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, or accidental contact — and shuts off power in milliseconds, potentially preventing electrocution.

Queensland Law Requires Safety Switches

Under Queensland's Electrical Safety Act and the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000), safety switches are mandatory:

  • All new electrical work must include safety switches on power and lighting circuits
  • All rental properties must have safety switches on all circuits (including older properties)
  • At sale of property — while not strictly mandated at point of sale, buyers are increasingly requiring compliance, and non-compliant boards affect property value

Types of Safety Switches We Install

  • Switchboard-mounted RCDs: Protect entire circuits — the most reliable and preferred solution. Installed in your main switchboard.
  • Combination RCBOs: Combined residual current device and circuit breaker in a single unit — ideal when there is limited space in your board.
  • Portable RCDs: Plug-in protection for individual appliances in situations where a switchboard installation isn't immediately possible.
Safety switch testing with calibrated RCD tester

Safety Switch Testing

Existing safety switches should be tested every 6 months — a simple process you can do yourself by pressing the "Test" button on each device. However, the test button only verifies the mechanical trip function. A calibrated RCD tester (which we carry) measures the actual trip time in milliseconds, confirming the device meets Australian Standards. We recommend professional testing:

  • When you move into a new rental property (to verify compliance)
  • Every 2 years as part of a general electrical maintenance check
  • After any significant electrical event (storm, flooding, power surge)
