The Moreton Bay islands — Macleay, Russell, Lamb, Karragarra, and Coochiemudlo — are one of Queensland's most unique living environments. The combination of stunning natural surroundings, tight-knit communities, and a ferry-dependent lifestyle creates both challenges and opportunities when it comes to solar and electrical work.

East West Solar and Electrical is based right here on Macleay Island. We're not a mainland company sending crews over — we live and work on the islands. That makes a significant difference to how we approach every installation.

The Bay Islands Grid — What's Different?

Macleay Island and the surrounding Bay Islands are connected to the Energex network via submarine cable from the mainland. While the grid connection is reliable, island residents face some specific challenges:

  • Voltage fluctuations: End-of-line grid connections can experience more voltage variation than mainland suburbs. Quality inverters with wide voltage tolerance are important.
  • Higher electricity rates: Island residents on some tariffs can pay more per kWh than the mainland average, making solar even more financially attractive.
  • Feed-in tariff access: Island properties have full access to feed-in tariffs — any excess solar generation is credited to your bill just like on the mainland.
  • Storm resilience: The islands experience tropical storm events that can cause temporary grid outages. A battery system provides backup power when the grid is down.

Ferry and Logistics Considerations

Getting solar panels, inverters, and batteries to the Bay Islands requires careful planning. Here's how we manage it:

  • Ferry scheduling: Equipment must be sized, packaged, and scheduled to align with the Translink ferry timetable. We coordinate all freight logistics as part of our service.
  • Vehicle and crane access: Not all properties have easy vehicle access. We assess this during your pre-installation site visit to ensure we have the right equipment available.
  • Weather windows: Island installations are planned around weather windows. We always build contingency time into our scheduling.
  • No additional logistics charge: For Macleay Island and the immediate Bay Islands, we do not charge additional logistics fees — it's factored into our standard island pricing.

Why Battery Storage Makes Especially Good Sense on the Islands

While battery storage makes sense anywhere in Queensland, it's particularly valuable on the Bay Islands:

  • Grid outage protection: When storms knock out the submarine cable or local network, a battery keeps your lights on, fridge running, and essentials powered.
  • Higher self-consumption value: Island residents who maximise solar self-consumption (rather than exporting to the grid) achieve the best financial returns.
  • EPS/UPS mode: Our battery systems provide Emergency Power Supply mode — automatically switching to battery in the event of a grid outage without manual intervention.

System Sizing for Island Homes

Island homes often have different energy profiles from mainland suburban homes. Many are holiday homes with variable occupancy; others are permanent residences with higher air-conditioning loads in summer. We customise every system to your specific usage pattern:

  • Review of 12 months of electricity bills to understand seasonal usage patterns
  • On-site assessment of roof space, orientation, and shading
  • System sized to maximise self-consumption, not just total generation
  • Battery sizing based on your typical daily draw and overnight usage

Which Islands Do We Service?

East West Solar and Electrical regularly service the following islands in Moreton Bay:

  • Macleay Island (our home base)
  • Russell Island
  • Lamb Island
  • Karragarra Island
  • Coochiemudlo Island
  • North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah)

We also service the broader South East Queensland mainland — from Brisbane south to the Gold Coast and throughout the Redland City and Logan areas.

Approvals and Network Connection

All solar and battery systems must be approved by Energex before connection to the grid. We handle all paperwork and approvals on your behalf:

  • Energex application and approval
  • Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work (CCEW)
  • STCs assignment and rebate paperwork
  • Retailer notification for feed-in tariff setup
